Two trainees are “On-Call” from home every night, one at University Hospital and one at Victoria Hospital. The trainees cover “1 in 4” nights on call. The residents round on the evening shift along with the Consultant. While on call, the residents are responsible for acute consultations, unstable dialysis patients, and admission and management of renal transplant patients. The rotating junior Internal Medicine residents are on first call for the Nephrology Ward at Victoria Hospital, with the Nephrology Trainee available for second call for the Nephrology Ward, and on first call for Consultative Service and the Emergency Room. At University Hospital, there is no Nephrology ward and ill dialysis patients are admitted under the Internal Medicine Team, with the Nephrology Trainee being available for consultation. Renal Transplant patients, however, do get admitted directly to the Transplant Unit and are directly under the care of the Nephrology Team, with the Nephrology Trainee as first call.

On weekends, the Nephrology trainees and staff round together and work together to provide service to the dialysis patients, consult service and in-patient service.
